Painting Canada: The Group of Seven and Tom Thomson

Course description: The Group of Seven, also known as the Algonquin School, was a group of Canadian landscape painters active from 1920 to 1933, originally consisting of Franklin Carmichael, Lawren Harris, A. Y. Jackson, Frank Johnston, Arthur Lismer, J. E. H. MacDonald and Frederick Varley. Believing that a distinct Canadian art could be developed through direct contact with nature, the Group of Seven initiated the first major Canadian national art movement. We will study the biographies and the paintings of each of the original artists.
OPTIONAL: The class will conclude with a long weekend trip (paid for separately) to Toronto May 3-6, 2018 to see the actual original paintings in three Toronto museums.If interested, you must book the trip by January 15. Click on the link below for all the details!

Painting Flowers in Watercolor

Course description: Find your artistic muse through watercolor. Discover how it is uncontrollable, fluid and alive. But don't be intimidated by this lovely medium. Cathy is known for her use of color, color theory and her unique approach to watercolor painting which is somewhat impressionistic with a southwestern flair. She will lead you through the process of putting together a watercolor painting from start to finish. This one day workshop will focus on painting spring and summer flowers. Some or all of the following watercolor techniques may be used: masking fluid, splatter, wet on wet, wet on dry, dry brush, glazing, light to dark, and beyond. All abilities and levels welcomed. Pysanky Egg Decorating

Course description: Pysanky are traditional Ukrainian Easter eggs that are created using an ancient wax-resist method. Derived from the word "pysaty" (to write), these beautiful eggs are made by writing with wax on the surface of the egg with a tool called a "kitska" before dyeing. Each egg is decorated with traditional symbols and colors that have carried down generation after generation. Come learn the history of these beautiful works of art, and make your own to take home.
